Written by Beth Henley

Directed by Shonda Currell

Warm-hearted, irreverent, zany and brilliantly imaginative, the play teems with humanity and humor as it examines the plight of three young Mississippi sisters betrayed by their passions. At the core of the melodramatic black comedy are the three Magrath sisters, Meg, Babe, and Lenny, who reunite at Old Granddaddy's home after Babe shoots her abusive husband. The trio was raised in a dysfunctional family with a penchant for ugly predicaments and each has endured her share of hardship. Grandaddy is in the hospital. Babe has shot her husband. Meg is having anxiety attacks and Lenny, on her birthday, tries desperately to hold the troubled family together. Their troubles, grave and yet, somehow, hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helpless not to fall in love with her. Set in Hazelhurst, Mississippi, five years after hurricane Camille, Beth Henley’s touching and infectious dark comedy is passionate, witty and intelligent. In the end the play is the story of how its young characters escape the past to seize the future—but the telling is so true and touching and consistently hilarious that it will linger in the mind long after the curtain has descended.
